第140ー 〜付き

Hello everyone and welcome to another JapaBit!!

Today we’re going to look at another suffix which adds the meaning of “attached” or “includes.”

The suffix in question comes from the verb く which means (among many other things) “to be attached” or “to accompany.” When used as a suffix this way, you change it to its -masu form which is 〜き.

Let’s look at some examples!

1- 付録ふろくきの絵本えほんう。
I will buy a picture book with an appendix.

2- 変速機へんそくき自転車じてんしゃった。
I bought a bicycle with gears.

3- 屋根やねきのベンチにすわった。
We sat at a bench with a roof.

4- 家具かぐきのいえした。
We moved to a furnished house.

5- 説明書せつめいしょきの中古ちゅうこゲームをさがしていた。
I was looking for a used game with its instructions manual.

Notice that in all the examples except for example #2, when 〜き is followed by a noun, the possessive particle の is needed. In #2 it is not used because the term “bicycle with gears” in Japanese is like a compound noun so you don’t really need の to attach them, but you could use の for that one too and you would still be grammatically correct.

This is all for today’s JapaBit. Thanks for reading and see you next time!
